a life song

I cried as you lit the cigarette between your lips

And mumbled something that I can’t remember

Things that probably meant something at one time

But have been lost to a place or space  disintegrated into endless

I listen to your songs on the subway

And hum stolen melodies

That were never lived for me

But I casually pretend an insignificant existence to remember you

As time moves on

I lose pieces of you

And forget what anything was once about

Isn’t it sad

That life is like that
